CLASS LLC publication releases Faux Finished, a mystery by Dawn Dixon.

CLASS LLC publication releases Faux Finished, a mystery by Dawn Dixon.

The book launch will be at the Moveable Feast on Tuesday, Aug. 17  (11 AM-1 PM) at The Village House in Litchfield Beach. A review copy of the book is available upon request to the CLASS LLC.

CLASS Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Faux Finished, a cozy mystery by Dawn Dixon, winner of Malice Domestic’s William F. Deeck Grant for Unpublished Writers. She’s written for local, regional and national publications for more than 20 years and worked as a communications specialist and financial editor in corporate America.

Faux Finished is her first novel. In it, decorative painter Bridget O’Brien is working late at the Magnolia Blossom Country Club when she hears noises in the dark deserted clubhouse. Investigating, she stumbles over a body in the men’s locker room. A business woman in Chapel Hill, N.C., Bridget’s neglected her family as she dealt with personal demons. But when her estranged teenage daughter confesses to the murder, Bridget finally gets her priorities. She charges into a wacky, reckless investigation to clear her daughter’s name. But is the child really innocent? Dodging police, Bridget blitzes through clues and suspects, managing to stay on the right side of the law … just. Despite family secrets frustrating her efforts, and bonding and redemption with loved ones almost out of reach, Bridget targets the killer amid the March Madness of a UNC-Duke basketball game. The teams battle. The crowd erupts. Is Bridget in over her head?

“Faux Finished delivers what makes a cozy mystery fun: interesting characters to spend time with, a peek behind the scenes of a decorative painter’s life, loads of true Southern zaniness during a college basketball season, and a puzzle worth solving,” writes author Cathy Pickens, winner of St. Martin’s Malice Domestic Award for Best Traditional Mystery.

Dixon claims Charlotte, N.C., as home, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as her own personal utopia, although she’s residing in South Carolina’s Lowcountry for the time being. Visit her website at www.DawnDixon.net.

The book will be featured at a Moveable Feast on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 11 AM-1 PM at The Village House in Litchfield.  Tickets are $30 per person and include a presentation by the author followed by lunch catered by the Divine Group of Murrells Inlet.

Reservations may be made by calling 843.235.9600 or online at www.ClassAtPawleys.com. Books will be available at the event ($20) for signing, or in advance from Litchfield Books or the publisher at www.ClassAtPawleys.com.

CLASS Productions Releases Overcoming, A Memoir by Robert N. Jenkins, Sr.

CLASS Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Overcoming, the inspiring and informative memoir by Robert N. Jenkins, Sr., one of 13 children born to a rural McClellanville couple. Jenkins overcame poverty and prejudice to become a member of the Air Force rifle corps, the fourth African American graduate of The Citadel, a graduate of the University of South Carolina’s law school, a distinguished attorney providing legal defense for those without means, and ultimately a family court judge meting out justice with fairness and compassion.

Through the Jim Crow South of the 50s and 60s and an inequitable education system, despite The Great Society’s efforts to balance the scales, Jenkins persevered through hard work, determination, a commitment to learning, and an abiding faith, all of which disallowed “excuses” – for himself, his children, his co-workers, and his clients.

His decades-long friendship with Congressman James E. Clyburn, Majority Whip of the U.S. Congress, is honored in the Foreword when Clyburn pens, “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once intoned that, ‘Anyone can be great because anyone can serve ... You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.’ The great Civil Rights leader could have been talking about Robert Jenkins.”

Filled with photos and personal remembrances, Overcoming is an inspirational reflection on a life well lived. The book will be launched at a Moveable Feast on Friday, July 2, 11 AM-1 PM at the McClellanville Town Hall, 405 Pinckney Street.  Space is limited, reservations are required. Tickets are $30 per person and include a presentation by the author followed by lunch catered by Joe’s Catering Service/Buckshot’s Restaurant.

Reservations may be made by calling 843.235.9600 or online at https://classatpawleys.com/class.php. Books will be available at the event ($20) for signing, or in advance from the Village Museum in McClellanville (www.VillageMuseum.com) or the publisher, www.ClassAtPawleys.com.

Moveable Feast: Dwight McInvaill, Caroline Palmer & Anne Tinker at Kimbel’s, Wachesaw

Alice Ravenel Huger Smith (1876-1958), a leader of the Charleston Renaissance, immortalized the beauty and history of the Carolina Lowcountry and helped propel the region into an important destination for cultural tourism. A lifelong Charleston resident, she helped spark the city’s historic preservation movement, depicted the waning days of rice planting, and captured the mystical spirit of the Lowcountry in luminous watercolors. This beautifully illustrated volume is a personal account of the artist’s life and work by Georgetown County Library System Director Dwight McInvaill that draws on unpublished papers, letters, and interviews. It includes over 200 paintings, prints, sketches, and photographs, many shared for the first time. The most comprehensive book ever made of Alice’s work, it is both an important contribution to Southern art scholarship and a gorgeous addition to the bookshelves of art lovers. Published by Evening Post Books in collaboration with the Middleton Place Foundation which book proceeds benefit.

Moveable Feast: Andrew Waters (To The End of the World) at Inlet Affairs

Thrilling escapes. Daring river crossings. An American general stranded alone, evading British patrols. A British general burning clean his psychological despair while the flames of his furious army scorch the countryside, roads and byways jammed with fleeing refugees, cataclysmic war erupting in the Carolinas. A neck-and-neck chase to Virginia’s Dan River with the fate of the American South hanging in the balance. One of the most important and implausible American military victories of all time. Though today it is a little-known footnote of the American Revolution, the “Race to the Dan” featured all of these exploits, and more, making it one of the most compelling chapters of our nation’s birth. Yet no book by a nationally distributed publisher has ever focused exclusively on this campaign until now.

Moveable Feast: Kristy Woodson Harvey (Under the Southern Sky) at Ocean One

Two childhood friends discover that love – and family – can be found in unconventional ways in this timely, moving novel from the USA TODAY bestselling author of the beautifully Southern, evocative Peachtree Bluff series. Recently separated Amelia Buxton, a dedicated journalist, never expected that uncovering the biggest story of her career would become deeply personal. But when she discovers that a cluster of embryos belonging to her childhood friend Parker and his late wife Greer have been deemed “abandoned,” she’s put in the unenviable position of telling Parker – and dredging up old wounds in the process. Parker has been unable to move forward since the loss of his beloved wife three years ago. He has all but forgotten about the frozen embryos, but once Amelia reveals her discovery, he knows that if he ever wants to get a part of Greer back, he’ll need to accept his fate as a single father and find a surrogate. Each dealing with their own private griefs, Parker and Amelia slowly begin to find solace in one another as they navigate an uncertain future against the backdrop of the pristine waters of their childhood home, Buxton Beach. The journey of self-discovery leads them to an unforgettable and life-changing lesson: Family – the one you’re born into and the one you choose – is always closer than you think. A fresh and unforgettable exploration of love, friendship, and the unbreakable ties that bind.

$48 including book. For reservations, 843.235.9600 or visit www.ClassAtPawleys.com.

Moveable Feast: David H. Brown (Only Death: Tragedy in Williamsburg) at Hot Fish Club

Now a retired pharmacist who graduated from Clemson University and The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Brown’s historical fiction is based on an actual event that occurred in Williamsburg County, S.C., in the year 1870. Some names have been changed, and some events have been embellished and expanded upon. Overall, this is what happened leading up to a very tragic climax. It started out as a friendly competition between two former Confederate soldiers for the hand of a lovely young lady. Over time, the competition developed into a feud and progressed to the point where a challenge to a duel was issued. One of the young men was very intelligent and highly educated. The other was a simple farmer. The challenge led to the death of one of these young men. One was the writer’s great-grandfather. The writer was told this story over a half-century ago by his grandfather. He feels that the story must be told so that others may learn what arrogance, obstinence, and vanity can lead to. A gripping opus that tells of a county’s history that inspired a story of great camaraderie, love, and hope.

Moveable Feast: Cindy Hedrick (Tails from SC CARES) at Litchfield Country Club

For 13 years, Cindy Hedrick and soulmate Skip Yeager (owners of Sweetie’s on Front Street in Georgetown) operated an exotic animal sanctuary on acreage outside Georgetown. The story of how the SC Coastal Animal Rescue & Education Sanctuary came to be, was instrumental in the healthy and happy lives of scores of exotics, farm animals, and non-releasable wildlife, and ultimately had to be dismantled is both inspiring and heartbreaking. While aimed to raise awareness and compassion in middle school children for the creatures that share their world, Cindy’s natural approach to telling the tales of just a few of the characters the sanctuary rescued is a lesson in memoir writing and a tearful/joyful read for animal lovers of all ages.
